Periodontal Probe
The periodontometer is used to measure the depth of the gingival pockets and is provided with markings at intervals of 3, 6, 9 and 12 mm. The instrument is used by the dentist, e.g. to collect the Periodontal Screening Index (PSI) or is also used within periodontal diagnostics.

The bleeding tendency of the gingiva and the structure of the tooth surfaces in the gingival pockets can also be examined. To determine pocket depth, the blunt tip is carefully guided between the tooth and the gum line to the dentist's instrument until the appropriate depth can be read. Due to the blunt tip, the examination with the dental instrument can be carried out particularly painlessly and without damaging the gingiva.

The survey of the PSI index is similar. Here, the upper and lower jaws are divided into sextants (anterior region and both posterior regions). The periodontal probe is then used to determine the pocket depths at least mesially, buccally, orally and distally on each tooth and the highest value is noted for each sextant.

A value of 0 indicates a healthy gingiva and periodontium, a value of 1 and 2 indicates gingivitis, which can be treated with oral hygiene measures, tartar removal or professional teeth cleaning. If the determined value is 3 or 4, the value indicates a moderately severe or severe form of periodontitis. Here, further treatments and therapies such as systematic periodontal treatment by the dentist are required.
